(originally A Charlie Brown Christmas ) is the first animated television special based on Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip. Debuting on CBS on December 9, 1965, the 25-minute special follows Charlie Brown as he struggles with holiday depression and the overwhelming commercialism of the season. Plot Summary

Feeling alienated by the consumerist nature of Christmas—typified by his dog Snoopy entering a gaudy decorating contest and his sister Sally asking for money—Charlie Brown seeks a deeper meaning for the holiday. At Lucy's suggestion, he agrees to direct a neighborhood Christmas play, but the experience only frustrates him as his peers ignore his instructions and mock his efforts.

In a final attempt to restore the "proper spirit," he selects a small, spindly real fir tree to be the play's centerpiece. The other children ridicule the tree, leading a despairing Charlie Brown to ask if anyone truly knows what Christmas is about. Linus famously answers by reciting the Nativity story from the Gospel of Luke. Moved by this, the gang unites to decorate the little tree, transforming it into something beautiful and celebrating together.
