Born in 1157 in Oxford, Richard was the third son of and Eleanor of Aquitaine . He was raised primarily in his mother’s duchy of Aquitaine, where he developed a deep affinity for French culture, poetry, and the "troubadour tradition". Richard was famously argumentative; by age 16, he had already taken command of an army to join his brothers in a "great rebellion" against their own father.
