Sheridan ultimately rejects the Shadows' offer, realizing it is a trap designed to break the alliance he has built. In a desperate move to strike a blow against his enemies, he uses a remote command to bring his starship, the White Star , crashing into the Shadows' underground capital city. The ship is armed with two massive nuclear devices, which detonate upon impact.

Just before the explosion, Sheridan follows the advice of the enigmatic Kosh and leaps into a miles-deep abyss, seemingly choosing death over capture.

Upon arriving, Sheridan discovers that Anna has been "reprogrammed" by the Shadows to serve as their emissary. The Shadows attempt to persuade Sheridan to join their cause, arguing that their philosophy of promoting evolution through conflict and chaos is necessary for the galaxy's long-term survival.
