Harry Miller (Victor Mature), a U.S. Army veteran discharged in Germany, reluctantly follows his British wife, Connie, to her hometown of Liverpool. Desperate to save money for a return to the States, Harry takes a job as a lorry driver. He soon becomes entangled with Joe Easy (Patrick Allen), a ruthless crime syndicate boss who runs a smuggling and hijacking ring. Harry’s situation complicates further when he begins a steamy affair with Joe's unhappy mistress, Lynn (Diana Dors).
